NDSU, Ellingson Will Tile Big Iron’s Field Demo Before Our Eyes

Will YOU be among the Big Iron will have aan estimated 80,000 show-goers this year? (I think I remember there are only 35,000 or so commercial farmers in North Dakota.)

The event will run Sept. 13-15 at the Red River Valley Fairgrounds in West Fargo. Times are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday and Wednesday, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday. It’s free. I’m planning on being in the Agweek booth for sure on Tuesday and Wednesday between 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.

The event 800 exhibitors and is sold out. The event covers 100 acres. People Mover trams take visitors to exhibits at 2 p.m. daily.

I think one of my interests this will be field demonstrations that will feature field tiling. Everybody’s wet in the Red River Valley this year. Everybody is thinking tiling. Here are the times:

2-4 p.m. daily — North Dakota State University Extension Service: Tile drainage, all three days.

John Nowatzki, NDSU Extension agricultural engineer, says demos will feature a different aspect of tiling every day. The goal is to tile the entire 71-acre demonstration field over the three days, in cooperation with Ellingson Companies. The system will include a control structure.

Hans Kandel, an NDSU Extension Service agronomist, will be a featured presenter. He says tiled fields typically have a 10 percent increase in yield, due to timely planting, healthier roots, and timely spraying. Topics will include agronomic benefits, economics and rules and regulations.

Sept. 13 – 2 p.m. Tile Drain and Crop production: Kandel; 2:10 p.m., System Design, Tom Scherer, NDSU Ag Enbgineer;

Sept. 14 – 2 p.m., Federal tiling regulations, Stuart Blotter, Natural Resource and Conservation Service. 2:10 p.m., Tile Drain Water Quality, Roxanne Johnson, NDSU Extension Service; 2:20, Tile Drainage and Saline Soils, NDSU Tom DeSutter; 2:30 p.m., Main line installation, Ellingson; 3:30 p.m., managing installation ridges, NDSU Extension.

Sept. 15 – 2 p.m., Tile economics, NDSU Extension Economist, Dwight Aakre; 2:10 p.m, Drainage Water Management, Keith Weston NRCS; 2:20, Online Subsurface Drainage Tool, Mike Ulmer, NRCS., 2:30 p.m., Cover Crops for Water Removal, Brent Gustafson, NRCS, Fargo., 2:40 Lateral Line Installation, Ellingson.
